So let me tell you how all of this began. It was January. I had just turned 26 and it was freezing outside - and I mean literally freezing. I was watching back to back episodes of ‘Friends’ (they’d just put the whole thing on Netflix, which really wasn’t helping with my procrastination) and suddenly, I had an idea for a writing project. This was a particular surprise to me, as although I labelled myself as a ‘writer’ I actually hadn’t written anything for a good while…
I decided that I would try and write a song in a limited time frame, as a challenge. It meant that I had a deadline to work to, which of course meant there would be pressure for me to actually finish it. I randomly decided that a week would be enough time to do it - and thus A Song In Seven Days was born.
Over the festive period, I had been watching a lot of YouTube with my sister and the concept of Vlogging had piqued my interest - in particular the work of The Michalaks. There was something different about it - a human quality that other Vlogs don’t seem to possess. I liked the storytelling, the humour and of course the beautiful cinematography. I knew that I wanted to have a go at documenting my songwriting process in the same way - to tell the story of how the song came to be. So armed with my iPhone and an idea for a song, I set out on my Vlogging journey!
A few days later, my first song idea hit me. My mum had just thrown out the Christmas Radio times - a sign to me that the festive season is well and truly over. I knew at that point that I had to write a ‘Post-Christmas’ song. To me it was a subject that not many people had covered before, so it was perfect!
And thus ’New Year, Still Me’ was born. It was my love letter to the festive season and all the wonderful things I’d done - including flicking through the Radio Times and watching Zoella’s Vlogmas in its entirety…
With all of the songs in this project, I simultaneously created a 'Vlog' documenting the story of how I wrote the song. This is the story behind 'New Year, Still Me'.
So, what do you think?
Now that you've heard the song and got to know what it's all about, I'd love to know what you think! Let's get a discussion going!
