"A song designed by committee..."

By April, I knew it was time to shake things up a bit. I’d well and truly got back into songwriting and I was loving every minute of it - but I was playing it too safe. I’d always wanted to try creating some ‘aleatoric’ music and I knew my friends and family would be keen to help. So I let them make all of the key decisions in the songwriting process…

So I started as I meant to go on - I called up my friend Louise and got her to name the song. It was April 1st, so of course she decided it would be called ‘The April Fool. As soon as we’d named it the song started to take shape. I let Social Media decide if it would be a 60s Psychedelic song or a 70s soft rock number - they chose the latter.
Then came a series of decisions that would shape the writing process. Would it be written on the guitar or the piano? How many backing vocal harmonies was I allowed to use? Which guitar should I use to play the solo? It was all left up to my nearest and dearest…

Writing this song was a bit like being thrown in at the deep end. Normally, I like to have a bit more control over my work and I had to let some of the things I would have preferred go. I always wonder what the song would have been like if it were a 60s psychedelic track - I imagine it would have been totally different. Somewhere in a parallel universe, that song exists.

By this point I was four months into ‘A Song In Seven Days’ and I was so glad I’d had the idea at the start of the year. I’d already written four songs in four months and therefore hit the most prolific writing period of my life to date. Not only that but I’d found a way to include those closest to me. Is there really anything better than doing the things you love with the people you love?
Let me hear the song!

The Story Behind The Song...

With all of the songs in this project, I simultaneously created a 'Vlog' documenting the story of how I wrote the song. This is the story behind 'The April Fool'.

So, what do you think?

Now that you've heard the song and got to know what it's all about, I'd love to know what you think! Let's get a discussion going!
